Yesterday We learned how to make 20 stairs and then when somebdy walks on the stairs I would make it explode and then they would fall and then hit the gropund!! And it would be cool! I also learned how to make little circles fall and roll for 5 seconds and then they explode. Today were going to do a pod race. And I'm really exiding!! I'm going to put like a boost and I'm probibly also going to somehow thow a bomb at someone and I will hit them off.

On Second Life i learn how to make my objet to make stairs when i told it to and explodle them too. My objet also tought to make my objet dance with me when i told it too. I learn how to do alot with my objets like to move it to make it invisable i learn alot this past week about my objet and, about second life, House and, also about my avator. I made a pet yesterday and how to make it comand me. Today i am going to make a car. And we are all going to race ecother. I am planing to have partacles to come out of my car so the other players cant see. I am goingt o make my car go faster when i tell it to and i am goign to do more but i dont know what i am going to do next. Today before the finnel race i am going to ask ed how to i make my car fly and how to let my car move just by the arrow keys.

Moving on to Loops

We're nearly ready to learn loops. So, by the end of the day, we will have covered the basic structure of LSLWiki programs, if-then statements, and loops -- which, from what I can tell, are the basics of programming.

The kids have now learned enough that they've started to mine Ed's programs on his Second Life blog. William was able to turn his rocket into a particle generator without any help. Hopefully, after Friday, most of them will be able to manipulate the scripts that they find on-line and get objects to do what they want them to do.

We're pleased! They're really catching on.

They asked today if it was possible to do videos in SL. I showed them some of the videos that Ed found on YouTube. I suspect, we'll have some short films by the end of tomorrow!

Yesterday I learned how to become a dragon and I also learned how to put one of our things in a box and then make it explode! And I thought that was cool! I also learned how to make our parrot say the same exact thing that we said. But sometimes when we would be to close to another parrot that when we said something the parrot next to us would say the same and my parrot would the same and after it got a little annoying so I had to fly far far away from the other parrot so they don't keep talking for ever!!!Tiffani I'm sending you two images.

In Second Life there is a possibillity of turning into a dragon. First you access your inventory,go to library,shirts, then click on Dragonlet... costume. You can also program a parrot to copy your every words!! There is also a possibillity of makking a bomb or "exploding object". We just started the second annual EdBoost computer camp, ComputerBoost!, of course, with a new parcel of land, courtesy of Virtual World Campus (we've leased the land through FireSabre). This piece of land is certainly quite picturesque and we have river and ocean views. The kids have, as usual, gotten busy building all kinds of structures.

In terms of programming, this batch of kids is amazing! They've covered 5 lessons so far. In two days, they learned to create objects, have them talk, have them listen, make them change colors, make them move (using the 3-D vectors), and make them explode (which involves having the object listen to an explode command, make a noise, and shoot out a picture). For practical reasons, many of them have also learned to talk on different channels and they've definitely learned to raid Ed's inventory for his images, sounds, and songs. Greg's exploder sings Blue Moon when it explodes! William's exploder shoots out pictures of Homer Simpson. In super-advanced moves, William has managed to create a rocket ship out of his object (by appending other objects), put his script into the rocket, so it now moves (he can ride it) and explodes (although he's altered the program so that the explosion is really more of a blast off of Homer Simpsons than a proper explosion.

Today we learn to rez... which should be really fun.

SecondLife was a good experience. It was really fun! It's really fun how we would take out a magic wand and hit the ground and a shape would appear! It was awesome! It was fun also how you could tell the shape to say you are the god or something like that.You could make many more things!! I think I am going to be playing SecondLIfe for quite a while.

I had been a little frustrated that the kids had so many pre-made objects in their inventories: they were so busy playing, it was hard to get them to program. But, in the last class, the kids learned how to rez objects and when Sin created an R2D2 and had it rez a light saber, it made me see the fun in these pre-made objects as well.

Today, I also overhead Sin say, "This is the only part of my life when I can afford to have stuff!" So, there's something pretty cool to that too...

Should be more posts coming soon -- we also have several new students who are quickly catching up.

As for my programming: today, I figured out how to rez several objects in several differnet locations! I'm kind of excited. I'm begining to understand the scripting lingo and how vectors work. So, the photo above is my "Dancing Donut" box. When someone says "dancers" the troupe of multi-flavored (color changing script -- they're blueberry and strawberry in the pic), moving (moving objects with vectors script) donuts, appear above the box (rezzing script). When someone says "exit," the dancing donuts disappear in a cloud of flames (exploding script). There are still some glitches to work out, but I'm having fun with them. :)

Tursday the 8th of Febuary at edboost we learned how to script exploding things and built all of our own unieck objects that explode.It was so cool!

Color changes, movement, and explosions!

When we first started, Hector was having students copy and paste programs from his blog... they got the joy of making their objects "do stuff" but they weren't thinking about the programs very hard. It was also sort of a free-for-all.... RL Hector competing with the computers for the students' attention.

So, the past two weeks, we'ved tried a new tactic. RL Hector comes with pre-printed lessons and sits down the with students AWAY from the computers to explain what they'll be learning.

He's also having the kids type the programs themselves. It's wonderful.. they're getting a sense of how detail-oriented programming is (and we love how, when a program won't save, the compiler tells us where the error is! -- this is SO great for teaching!). Typing out the programs has also helped the kids to start to think about what makes the programs work. They realize that when they forget the "llListen" command, their objects won't listen to their commands. They're learning that if they don't set the "startPosition" their objects don't move properly.

Last week Tiana asked to learn how to make objects come on command. The boys wanted to make things explode. Hector taught them both programs today. He also finally got them to learn how to talk on private channels.

Hector has tried to teach them how to talk on private channels before, but they were not terribly interested. However, once Chestnut realized that he could plant explosives all over and SHOUT "explode" to make them pop all over our parcel, he started shouting a lot. Suddenly Sin started to get frustrated because Chestnut kept exploding Sin's explodable objects WHILE he was trying to script them. Sin quickly learned how to chat on a private channel. It was our first experience of the interactive aspect of SL pushing the kids to better programming.

I've made multi-flavored donuts and I'm trying to teach them to dance.... hopefully I'll have a photo tomorrow to post up here.

We've had a lot of changes since Winter Break.

Hargall -- our most advanced student -- moved and although he visits us in-world, he's not around to help the other kids in real life.

Several students (including Bree Mapp and Anthony Hawkeye who left the previous posts) have just joined. We've had six-eight students over the last two weeks, most of them more or less beginners.

We've also had company on the island: a 3-D Gaming group. Some were not especially friendly, but others were great and gave our students lots of structures.

Our bit of the island now looks like urban sprawl to the millionth power (or, like I imagine The Raft in Snow Crash looked) with buildings running into one another and tiny passages in and out.

Hector and I have started over, with assignment one. Trying to teach the new students the ropes, while Sin and Chestnut do some work on their own projects.

Hector's newest ideas are to give the students some kind of merit badge (or maybe more akin to belts in martial arts) for accomplishing programming tasks. I'm excited to start that. I'll post some pictures when we get that organized. But the kids won't be able to pass levels until they post their accomplishments here on the blog, so stay tuned for more frequent postings from us!

Struggling a little to find time for everyone to get on TSL. Lately, everyone has had too much homework! One of our girls finally wanted to try, but she's been overloaded with math (figuring compound interest of all things!). I hoping that next week, the week before winter break, will be a good week to get some TSL work done. Ed's been teaching the boys to program skateboards and vehicles. After watching some of the girls at EdBoost enjoying Internet programs where they get to play with outfits (essentially online paper dolls), Ed's gotten to work learning how to program fancy clothing!

Claudia tells us that we will soon have company on the island (a group of students from Minnesota and maybe another group from Peru (I think) -- should be fun! More later...

Second life is one of the best things to do on a Friday, the building the scripting is great. The things I like in this program is the scripting with a good script will take you a long way for programming vehicles and objects that can pass the limit.

Hargall and Sin have been building amazing things, including an SL EdBoost that is getting more and more realistic. It's really a nice space now, and reminds me that the RL EdBoost is a nice space too! The SL version has much higher ceilings (the ceiling of the building is so high that it's way out of sight, and even when you try to fly up to it, it takes serious work to get there!). We are collecting a few "books" of useful things for scripts in the SL EdBoost computer lab.

Besides that towering building, we have some long low ones. One of them is partly wallpapered with sunsets and has some other nice blue and green materials, so it's a nice place to be and to work too.

We are all getting better at scripting. Hargall realized that he could put his knock knock joke script, and a music script too, into his hat. And Sin put a Foo Fighters looping script into his hat, so now when these guys have their hats on they are noisy! Totally under control now: copying scripts into objects and making small modifications. Beginning: complete understanding of the first scripts; figuring out what to do when debugging is needed; figuring out how to set the permissions (share with group, allow copy/modify/transfer) so that Hector and Tiplife can provide advice and keep track of progress. We practiced with sounds and music this week, and will do images next week, but these guys are looking forward to vehicles, animations, and programs that build things!

Issues/wishes:

We have quite a lot of this is "litter" that could be cleaned up, but we have not decided how to do that. E.g. we want to return the extra motorcycles but leave our structures untouched.

We have not been able to set a "media texture" or a parcel music URL (these are in "About Land", clicking on the region name at the top of the screen).

We have a couple more students coming through the orientation to join us too! That will be fun. I think they will probably catch up with the rest of us quickly.

Claudia tells me that our parcel of land is ready to go. Ed says he visited and that it's still "locked" but that it looks good. I just managed to get there myself... how strange to walk through a dark isolated island all by myself (see pic).

Our patch of land is on the SE corner and I love the openess... but I'm looking forward to how the kids will build it up as well!

So far, we have managed to get two kids through the sign-up process (some technical difficulties for one student but we've finally overcome them). For Chestnut Breck, it was a new experience just making an email account! I hope I can get their first blog posts tomorrow and then start the class this week? Next week at the latest...

Check out the "postcard" we got from Claudia Linden today -- she's standing on what will soon be EdBoost's plot on the Campus: TSL island. It's pretty exciting -- EdBoost has never had land to develop before, much less oceanside property.

How did we get here? It's sort of a long story but I'll try to keep it short...

Two summers ago, Ed (mostly) and I (learning as we went along) put together an intro computer programming class for middle school students. The schedule was awkward and so enrollment was low but the students who came learned quite a lot about programming with Python (the language we used). We looked forward to hosting more classes and we knew that for future classes we'd need to find a way to give the kids lots of access to the computers so that they could practice. But, the summer class format was such disaster, and scheduling was so hard, I let this past summer come and go without a computer class.

Enter Hargall Orbit (his TSL name), one of our Homework and School Project Assistance (HASPA) students. He's obessessed with Second Life and talks about it all the time. I finally had to check it out, just to see what he's so interested in. And it's true -- it's fascinating. A whole world -- online. I had never seen anything like it (admittedly, I'm not very well versed in these things). Apropos of nothing, Hargall asks me if I know anyone who can teach him to "script." Apparently Second Life (SL) allows you to make objects (anything from a new t-shirt, to a new motorcycle, to a new house) and if you can program in the SL language (Wiki LSL) you can make anything (you can also buy anything, but why buy things when you can make them yourself?). I forwarded the query to Ed, our computer expert, and he was soon hooked too.

From there, we contacted Claudia Linden, SL's resident education person. I was interested in using SL as a platform for teaching this student and his HASPA-mates how to do computer programming (the kids are here all afternoon -- no schedule problems and unlimited time to practice!), but EdBoost has a firm policy of NOT allowing students on sites where they can "chat" with strangers. Claudia had a solution! She told us that we could get space on educator's island and restrict access to EdBoost folks. She also invited us to submit a proposal to try out the Campus: TSL program free for the duration of our initial class (a considerable donation!).

And just today, we found out that we will a parcel of land to use for our class (see picture-- and there's Claudia, our SL helper!).

So, here I am, setting up my first blog as well. We're going to try to chronicle this experience -- and get the kids to post their opinions and experiences as well! Keep reading!
